Share real startup & monthly budgets for your ice cream shop — post numbers, pricing, and breakeven approach
Calling ice cream shop owners and founders: please share real, anonymized numbers and lessons so we can build practical benchmarks for this niche. If you’re planning to open, share your assumptions and which figures you still need to validate.
When you post, please include (as many as you can):
- City / market size (e.g., mid-size college town, tourist beach town, dense metro)
- Store size (sq ft), location type (strip, mall, downtown), months open per year
- Initial build-out & fit-out costs (construction, finishes, signage)
- Equipment costs (hard-serve machines, freezers, POS, seating, smallwares)
- One-time soft costs (permits, licenses, legal, marketing, opening inventory)
- First-month fixed costs and typical ongoing fixed costs (rent, utilities, insurance, permits)
- Average monthly labor cost or payroll % of sales and staffing model (FT/PT, hours)
- COGS % (ingredients, cones, cups, toppings) and how you calculate it
- Typical seasonal revenue swings (% diff peak vs. off-season) and monthly sales ranges
- Retail pricing examples (scoops, cups, specials) and target gross margin per item
- Breakeven month (when did you hit it?) and key actions that moved you toward profitability
- Tools/templates you use for cash-flow forecasting, P&L, inventory (links or filenames welcome)
Please anonymize sensitive details if needed. If you’re comfortable, paste CSV/spreadsheet snippets or attach templates; otherwise plain text is fine. By posting you agree to let community moderators use anonymized data in a compiled benchmark spreadsheet and follow-up threads.
I’ll monitor the thread and ask clarifying questions where helpful, and can synthesize responses into a simple breakeven/cashflow template for contributors. First-hand experiences only — please don’t repost vendor marketing or hypothetical estimates without noting they’re assumptions.
